Reset Paint Shop Pro Workspaces (7-8)

Intro: This reset will cure a wide range of seemingly unrelated problems, because corrupted program registries cause all sorts of weird things happening.
Paint Shop Pro 7

Close down PSP and relaunch it. At the instant you click on the icon to launch PSP, hold down CTRL+ALT. You may have to have several tries, because you only have a fraction of a second to grab the keys. If you miss the moment it will launch normally and you will have to close it down and try again.

When you get it right, you get 2 screens - about deleting the program registries and about file associations. Reply yes/OK to both. (Worry not, you are not deleting your whole Windows registry. It is the PSP program registries which cause problems if they get corrupted. Deleting them forces PSP to remake them properly).

Let the program launch. If you have a saved workspace (PSP 7) with any modifications you made in it, reload that. Otherwise you will have to do your toolbar customization again. You will also have to redo your preferences, including pointing all the tubes, plugins etc. to the proper paths. Your tubes, plugins, textures and so on will not be affected themselves - only the paths in the preferences.

Willy's reset works for all versions up to PSP 7. For PSP 8 you should first try File>preferences>reset preferences with delete all cache files checked, as described on p. 401 of the handbook.

If that does not work, you must edit the Windows Registry yourself.

If you do not feel confident about making changes to the Windows Registry, then uninstall PSP 8 and reinstall it if you have problems with the tools not working properly or persistent crashes which are not cured by the handbook instructions about resetting the preferences and clearing the caches. If you use the reset, follow the instructions exactly.

Use Start>Run and type in regedit

Use Registry>Export Registry file (this will back up the registry in case you make a mistake, but if you follow these instructions to the letter, you will not cause any problems)

Click on the + beside HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Click on the + beside software

Scroll down till you find the Jasc folder.
If PSP 8 is your only Jasc product, select the whole Jasc folder and hit the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete at the prompt.
If you have other Jasc programs, click the + beside the Jasc folder, and scroll down to Paint Shop Pro 8. Click that to select it and hit the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete at the prompt.

Exit the registry editor (Registry>Exit).

When you launch PSP 8 again it will be like a fresh installation. Re-load your workspace if you have customized it, and re-do your preferences.

If this does not cure the problem that made you delete the registry, you will need to uninstall and reinstall PSP 8.
